Family Visas

There are a number of ways the Canadian Government allows families and relatives to stay together under its Family Class Sponsorship programs. These Sponsorship programs are some of the most generous family reunification programs in the developed world. The Canadian government is proudly committed to keeping families together whenever possible.

There are a number of relationships that qualify for Family Class Sponsorship, including spouses and common-law partners, parents and grandparents, and dependent children. For parents and grandparents, there is also the Super Visa program and the new Parent and Grandparent Permanent Residence Program.

While the Super Visa is a long term visitor visa that allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada with their children for up to a continuous period of 2 years, the parent and grandparent PR programs allows them to apply for permanent residence, provided their sponsoring child meets the minimum income requirements (LICO) to qualify as an eligible sponsor. The 2019 program quota of 20,000 for the parent and grandparent program was achieved within 11 minutes of opening on 28 th January 2019. All approved Expressions of Interest will receive Invitations to Apply and processing of applications is estimated to take between 20-24 months.

Spouses and partners of Canadian citizens and permanent residents can join them in Canada under the family sponsorship program. Besides meeting the minimum criteria to qualify as a sponsor or eligible partner, it is important to establish the genuine and continuing nature of the partnership. It is vital to supply extensive evidence to prove the partnership, especially if it has been recently established.
