Study in Australia

Australian education ranks high globally and is a much sought-after study destination for international students of all age groups. You can study at all levels of education from primary and secondary school, to vocational education and training (VET), from English language courses to higher education including universities). As an international student on a student visa, you must study with an institution and in a course that is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). CRICOS registration guarantees that the course and the institution at which you study meet the high standards expected by international students.

International students apply under subclass 500 to participate in a course of study in Australia. You must be enrolled in a course of study and accompany your application with evidence of that intended course or activities related to study. Depending upon the country of origin, students may need to provide evidence of meeting financial criteria, language, health and character requirements.

Applicants for Student visas must show they are coming to Australia temporarily and will return upon the completion of the intended purpose. This is known as the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. The GTE requirement is used to make sure the student visa program is accessed as intended. The student visa program is not a way for international students to maintain ongoing residency in Australia. Students are encouraged to include a personalised statement along with the application explaining the clear purpose of study and expected outcomes. It is advisable to explain academic eligibility and relevance to previous studies and work experience. The applicant’s social, financial and occupational ties to their home country are also taken into consideration.

The holder of a student visa is eligible to work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once the course starts. Students who have completed their program of study in an eligible institution may also be entitled to a post graduate work permit subject to meeting the conditions of the visa.
